When the days start to shorten at the end of November and Christmas Day draws ever closer, those living in Germany can look forward to a particularly agreeable yuletide custom. For it’s the time when market squares and historical old town centres invite people to take a stroll around wooden stalls decked in festive array, sample the scent of culinary delights and Christmastide, and enjoy the unusual arts and crafts, the pick of Christmas decorations, plus musical attractions and activities for the children.

Germany’s Carnival celebrations in the days before the beginning of Lent have their own special character, but they are easily as boisterous and colourful as their famous counterpart in Rio de Janeiro.

The Luther Decade 2008-2017:
Following in Luther‘s Footsteps at a Turning Point in European History

In 1517 the Augustinian monk Martin Luther pinned his famous 95 theses in which he criticised the selling of indulgences by the Catholic Church to the door of Wittenberg’s Schlosskirche church. In doing so he marked the start of the Reformation, which celebrates its 500th anniversary in 2017. The Luther Decade got underway in 2008 and the lead-up to the anniversary features a host of lectures, exhibitions, festivals and concerts in celebration of the reformer and his influence.
