In 1517 the Augustinian monk Martin Luther pinned his famous 95 theses in which
he criticised the selling of indulgences by the Catholic Church to the door
of Wittenbergs Schlosskirche church. In doing so he marked the start of
the Reformation, which celebrates its 500th anniversary in 2017. The Luther
Decade got underway in 2008 and the lead-up to the anniversary features a host
of lectures, exhibitions, festivals and concerts in celebration of the reformer
and his influence.
